12 month prescriptions

12 Month Prescriptions
As from 1st February 2026, some people with stable, long-term health conditions may be able to get prescriptions for some medications for up to 12 months.

Your doctor will work with you to decide if a 12-month prescription is safe and appropriate for you and your health needs. If you feel this may be an option for you then please make a face-to-face appointment with your doctor to discuss. This visit will be a 12-month prescription appointment and if you wish to discuss other things then please make a double appointment.

12-month prescriptions are more likely to be suitable for people with stable, long-term health conditions when the dose of medication is unlikely to change and you do not require regular monitoring with blood tests or blood pressure.

The rules for controlled drugs like strong pain relievers and ADHD medicines are not changing. ADHD medications will continue to be prescribed for 3 months with no more than 1 month dispensed by the pharmacy.

12 month prescriptions must be picked up from the same pharmacy. Please note if you need to change pharmacy's, lose your medications, or require an extra short supply until you can see your doctor for a face-to- face review, there will be an additional charge for this.

Please remember: Your health always comes first.

  • What Is a Vasectomy Reversal?

A vasectomy reversal is a surgical procedure that reconnects the vas deferens — the tubes that were cut or sealed during a vasectomy. This allows sperm to once again enter the semen, giving you the chance to conceive naturally.

Many men consider vasectomy reversal due to life changes such as a new relationship and the desire for more children.

At CityMed in Auckland, we offer safe, effective vasectomy reversal surgery using loupe- assisted microsurgical techniques performed as a day procedure under local anesthetic with light sedation.

Why Choose CityMed for Your Vasectomy Reversal?

At CityMed Vasectomy Reversal Clinic in central Auckland, we perform this procedure using the loupe-assisted modified one-layer technique. This method is:

    • Minimally invasive
    • Performed under local anesthesia with sedation
    • Completed as a day procedure — no hospital admission required
    • Cost-effective — no general anesthesia or anesthetist needed

This technique allows for precise alignment of the vas deferens and is widely used in male fertility surgery.

    How Successful Is Vasectomy Reversal?

While no procedure can guarantee success, the technique we use achieves excellent outcomes with high surgical success rate : up to 80% of cases operated on in the past successfully restored the flow of sperm.

Pregnancy success depends on multiple factors including:

    • Restoration of the flow of sperm – 20% of the chances the scar tissue will block the duct
    • Level of Antisperm antibody (ASA) (which neutralizes the sperm) built up in the body after vasectomy - which affect the amount of viable sperm in semen to achieve natural pregnancy. Reversals done within 3 years of vasectomy have a success rate over 90% to achieve adequate sperm counts. After 10 years, chances drop below 50%.
    • Female partner’s fertility

How the Vasectomy Reversal Procedure Works

We use a loupe-assisted, single-layer technique performed under local anesthesia with sedation, which avoids the need for general anesthesia and hospital admission.

    Step-by-step overview:

    1. Local anesthetic is injected into each side of the scrotum.
    2. The scarred ends of the vas deferens are exposed and trimmed until a healthy open channel (lumen) is visible.
    3. A fine guide nylon is inserted to align the tubes.
    4. Micro sutures are used to stitch the tubes back together with high precision.
    5. The guide and stitches are removed one week later.

    Procedure time: approx. 90-120 minutes

Day surgery: You can return home the same day

    FAQs

Is a vasectomy reversal always successful?

No surgery is 100% effective. Sperm may return, but pregnancy depends on other factors including female fertility.

How long should I wait before trying to conceive?

You can start to have sex after 2 weeks post-surgery and pain free. Natural pregnancy can occur before the scheduled sperm flow analysis.   Alternatively, the couple can wait to plan for pregnancy when the test confirms that sperms reappeared in semen (usually at 6 weeks post operation. To test the sperm’s quantity and motility accurately, a semen analysis needs to be ordered via GP with recommendation of 12 month post vasectomy reversal surgery.

Can I get this done under general anesthesia?

At CityMed, we perform the procedure under local anesthesia and sedation, but can refer to a urology specialist if you require general anesthesia.
